PROJECT QUESTION: Please confirm that the common excavation is correct. It appears that the common excavation item is to be used to remove soils to accommodate the soil amendments and mulch, but the quantity of common excavation is higher than the total of the soil amendments and mulch.

Question: Please confirm that the common excavation is correct. It appears that the common excavation item is to be used to remove soils to accommodate the soil amendments and mulch, but the quantity of common excavation is higher than the total of the soil amendments and mulch.

Response: Common excavation includes stripping and removing 6 inch of topsoil, turf grass, weeds, and roots throughout the project area, and then replacing this loss in volume with topsoil borrow, soil amendments, and mulch. Amendments, mulch, and topsoil are greater than the common excavation because of the ‘crowning’ of the median. All ground cover vegetation must be stripped. Remaining volume may not be uniform (verify on site) and may remove higher ‘roadway debris contaminated’ volumes at curb backs and lesser volumes at the centers (to assist with crown shaping).

In Division S Section S-60. The following new paragraph is hereby added to S-60.1

(2) No Bid Item has been provided for Grading and Shaping. All work and costs necessary to grade and shape the medians with a center crown as shown in the Typical Median Section on sheet 47 shall be incidental to and included in the Bid Items for Common Excavation and Topsoil Borrow.
